This is a frightening verse when you think about it! Mankind worshipped a deity so that they might be rewarded in the end. People put in a great deal of time and money to worship.
Just think, this is exactly what the masses are doing today. That is why Paul said,"search the scriptures to see if these things are so." We too have to be on guard to make sure that unsoundness does not creep in.
In 1884 or a little before, the doctrine of "Partial Inspiration" split the brotherhood. Many left the sound teachings of Bro. Roberts. Bro.Roberts was still alive, but could not stop a teaching that sounds so ridiculous to us today.
One other thing we must guard against, is following charismatic leaders. Bro. Ashcroft was an outstanding exhorter and leader. He had been a wonderful help to bro. Roberts. He had been a preacher in the world and then learned the Truth. He had a large family and was very poor. As he began to travel and exhort, he began to draw a following to himself and the rest is history.
