Verses 13-14: “For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.”
The margin of my Bible has the word “vile” of verse 13 as the word “accursed” -- “his sons made themselves accursed” in Yahweh’s sight.
Eli's sons were a complete abomination before Yahweh, and swift judgement was going to come upon them. But the sin was not just with Eli’s sons, because it says, “I will judge [Eli’s] house forever for the iniquity which he knoweth.” God places just as much of the fault upon Eli because he knew of their transgressions and failed to stop them.
It says, “he [Eli] restrained them not.” At first, we may think that Eli did all that he could have done. We read in chapter 2 of Eli telling his sons to stop their wickedness. But the margin renders the phrase, “he restrained them not" as “he frowned not upon them.” In other words, Eli didn’t even wholeheartedly show his disapproval. Eli should have acted, but instead he told them off and then let the matter rest.
The conclusion of the Deity is a fearful one: "Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever."
