Verse 12: "Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath Yahweh helped us."
According to Strong's, Ebenezer means "stone of help," as we see in this 7th verse. There are only two other occurrences of the name Ebenezer, and both occur in 1 Samuel.
1 Samuel 4:1 - "And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek."
1 Samuel 5:1 - "And the Philistines took the ark of Elohim, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod."
Even though the Israelites were located at Ebenezer in the battles described in chapter 4, they did not put their trust in Yahweh. Under Samuel's guidance in this 7th chapter, they approached Yahweh correctly and were victorious in the battle.
