Thus it was in the case of the Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26–40). He had been to Jerusalem to worship, and, returning in his chariot via Gaza, was reading Isaiah 53. (It would be the Septuagint translation which was then current in Egypt and Ethiopia). He was sufficiently unspoiled by anti-Christian philosophy which has since become so aggressive, as to perceive that “the prophet or some other man” was in question. Philip, who had been directed by the Holy Spirit, saw him reading this, and said, “Understandest thou what thou readest?” The eunuch humbly and candidly answered, “How can I except some man should guide me”; and invited Philip into the chariot. Having read Isa. 53:7, 8, the eunuch enquired, “I pray thee of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself or of some other man. Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him JESUS.”
