Sounds like the well had been covered over by the philistines after Abraham left and another dug by Isaac's men there. This chapter makes it sound like Isaac named the place Shebah, but in chp 21 Abraham had a very similar experience with Abimelech and made a covenant with him calling the place Beersheba (the well of 7 - (they used 7 ewe lambs)). My middle margin translates Beersheba here the "Well of the oath", but the New Bible Dictionary makes it sound like this is a mistranslation and really should be the "well of 7".
