1 Samuel 17:58 -- "And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite."
Compare this verse with one from the previous chapter:
1 Samuel 16:21 -- "And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer."
How is it that Saul did not know who David was? Was their a great period of time between these two chapters?

We had the same question, and wonder if the chapters are out of sequence?

One explanation offered is that the latter part of chapter 16. is out of place, and that it should come somewhere in chapter 18. It seems far more likely that David was only employed for a little while, and then returned home again as stated in 17:15. The conflict with Goliath may have occurred months after. Meanwhile David would grow rapidly, fill out somewhat, and be dressed in shepherd’s clothes, instead of those supplied to one of the king’s armour-bearers, so that Saul may not have recognised him.

That is true. We also have the case of Joseph not being recognized by his brethren after a period of time (albeit a much longer time). I wonder how old David was in these various chapters.
