"Gathered unto his people". Given that Abraham's people were from Ur, it would seem there were two possibilities of what this means.
a)He died and was "transported" somewhere (ie heaven) to be with his people who died before him
or
b) He returned to the dirt where all his ancestors also went.
Jos 24:2 And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they served other gods.
Seeing his descendants served other gods, it is obvious they didn't "go to Heaven", so....option "B" is the only viable option.
