It seems that God, for the protection of David brought on Saul a voice of prophesying. Strange as it may seem for a wicked man as Saul, but it brought about an escape or David. Prophesying could be the praising of God, or in this case possibly the foretelling of David as future king. This is only speculation.

Verse 24: "And he stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Wherefore they say, Is Saul also among the prophets?"
Brother Mike J. has recently been doing a series of exhortations on the life of David, and from his studies I have the following note about this incident of Saul prophesying.
It appears that Saul was not fully naked, but that he removed his upper garments (e.g. armor, royal vestments). Taking off the royal apparel was symbolic of Saul being stripped of the kingdom and making the way for Yahweh's anointed, David.
