The most reliable and early manuscripts do not include most of vs 2 or any of vs 3 (ie..."When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather; for the sky is red. and in the morning, it will be foul weather to day; for the sky is red and lowering, o ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs fo the times?")
So what was the sign given: that of the Prophet Jonas. Recall he was thrown overboard and swallowed up for 3 days and then spit up to start a new life. So the sign for them a that time (and for us), was that Christ would be swallowed up in the earth for 3 days, then resurrected to a new life. If they didn't believe after this, what would they believe?
