David went among the Ziphites to hide from Saul. He was thinking that he was safe because the Ziphites were of his own tribe. The Ziphites took it on themselves to betray David without asking for a reward. The Ziphites went so far as to send out spies to search for David. Upon realizing the betrayal David moved to the wilderness of Maon. It is at this time that David wrote the 54 th Psalm.
